Fatal at the Wheel

Today at 6:45 a.m. a chain reaction accident happened on Interstate 790 due to the collision of two trailers being pulled by tractors killing two, and hospitalizing 20 more.

Two drivers of cars were dead and another twenty victims had to be hospitalized, four of them with life threatening injuries. Two of the seriously injured were air lifted to the trauma center in Statesville.

The cause of the accident was narrowed down by a preliminary source, Two Tractor trailers collided when driving down Interstate 790. One of the trailers was carrying diesel fuel, “ It was very lucky, Wei Said, that it didn’t roll over or dump any fuel or catch fire.”

According to Sgt. Albert Wei of the Police department the vehicles of the accident included four tractor trailers and fourteen cars. When Tony Sullivan of the fire department arrived he said it was quite hard to tell which victims belonged to what vehicles, “I have never seen anything that bad in the 18 ½ years I have been with the fire department.

“The road looked like a war zone,” stated Sullivan. There were victims sitting next to cars, blood in the street, emergency workers running around trying to help injured people. All of the fire departments ambulances were at the scene including help from four neighboring cities.

Although the accident happened going northbound, it shutdown both north and south lanes. This closure made commuters have to drive to the eastern side of the city and commute on interstate 690 backing traffic past three hours.

Interstate 790 was still under investigation and shutdown at 10 a.m. today and is unsure of its reopening.
